Kathmandu Valley has more good pre-wedding photo locations than most couples realize. The problem isn’t finding somewhere pretty, it’s picking the right one for the time of day, the season, and the mood you actually want in the photos. Here’s what we’ve learned shooting these spots for years.
Nagarkot, for mountain light
Nagarkot sits above the valley and catches sunrise light that’s hard to get anywhere closer to the city center. If you want that soft golden look with mountains in the background, this is the location, but it only works if you’re willing to start early. The best light is gone within an hour of sunrise, and by mid-morning the haze rolls in and flattens everything out.
Winter months, November through February, give the clearest mountain views. Monsoon season can still work for moody, cloud-heavy shots, but you’re gambling on visibility.

Patan Durbar Square, for architecture and texture
The carved wood, brick courtyards, and temple detail at Patan Durbar Square give photos a completely different feel from an outdoor nature shoot. Late afternoon light works best here, when the sun is low enough to catch the texture on the buildings without harsh overhead shadows.
It gets busy with tourists and locals both, so shooting on a weekday morning or during a quieter afternoon slot makes a real difference. We usually scout the crowd level before committing to a shot plan on the day.
Quieter garden and riverside spots
Not every couple wants a heritage-site backdrop or a mountain view. Some of our favorite sessions have been at smaller garden venues and riverside spots around the valley that don’t show up on typical “best pre-wedding locations” lists. These work well for couples who want something more intimate, and they’re far less crowded, which means more usable time and less waiting around for a clear shot.
Picking based on season
Winter (November to February) is generally the most reliable season across the valley. Clear skies, good visibility for mountain shots, and comfortable temperatures for a few hours outdoors in wedding or formal outfits.
Monsoon (June to September) narrows your options. Outdoor mountain-view shoots become unreliable, but covered heritage sites and indoor-adjacent locations still work fine, sometimes with dramatic cloud backdrops if you get lucky.
How much time to plan for
Most sessions run 2 to 3 hours, covering one or two locations. Trying to cram in three or four spots in one session usually means rushing every one of them and getting worse photos at all of them. We’d rather do two locations properly than four locations badly.
Frequently asked questions | pre wedding photoshoot locations Kathmandu
Q1. What’s the best time of year for a pre-wedding shoot in Kathmandu?
Ans: November through February offers the most reliable weather and clearest mountain visibility, particularly for locations like Nagarkot.
Q2. Do I need a permit to shoot at Patan Durbar Square?
Ans: Most heritage sites charge a small entry fee rather than requiring a formal photography permit, though this can change, so it’s worth confirming before your shoot date.
Q2. Can we shoot at more than one location in a single session?
Ans: Yes, most sessions cover one to two locations comfortably within 2 to 3 hours. More than that tends to rush the shoot without adding much value.
